Fear on Campus

From October 9th to the 13th, Rutgers held Turn The Campus Purple, an initiative to raise awareness about dating and domestic violence. The week featured a lecture, rally, and a vigil, all brought to campus by the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance. The campaign along with the other work VPVA has done come as a direct response to the school’s Campus Climate Survey, which found that 20 percent of undergraduate women had experienced some sort unwanted sexual contact since coming to Rutgers–New Brunswick.

This is not a Rutgers problem, but a higher education problem. According to RAINN, 23.1% of female and 5.4% of male undergraduate students have experienced rape or sexual assault. The number is even higher for women of color and LGBTQ women. Nick Anderson of the Washington Post found that of “more than 1,300 schools with at least 1,000 students, found 99 schools that had at least 10 reports of rape on their main campuses in 2014.” The Top Ten schools can be found below, and Rutgers-New Brunswick falls at number 8.
