Social Media and Journalism

Social media has been a source for journalism since its inception, good examples of journalism in social media is becoming harder and harder to find.

Journalism is an ever-changing part of life. In a society that is becoming more and more aware of everything going on in the world, journalism holds a very special place. Making sure that people get correct information is important when there is so much wrong information in the world. While Twitter has a lot of journalistic value, both good and bad, other social media platforms also have their place.

Above is a perfect example of journalism on Twitter being used in a good way. ABC15 in Phoenix first heard about a story and reported what they knew, then as more facts became available, they kept people updated. Once they had enough information they wrote the story so that they didn’t have any facts missing and misreport something.

This is another good example of journalism on Twitter. Twitter gives journalists the chance to interact with their audience when they have specific questions. In this case, it is a beat reporter for a Major League Baseball team responding to someone who has a question about the team. The journalist is able to provide what he knows to the audience who doesn’t know as much information as him or have the same sources he does.

The two images above are examples of Instagram being used for journalistic purposes. A picture is worth 1,000 words is the old saying and journalism on Instagram can really take advantage of that. Both are examples of good journalism on Instagram because the top picture just gives a little tid-bit of information that most audience members wouldn’t know about. The second one basically tells a whole story through a moving picture, and it just gives you a quick newsflash. The same type of thing you would see during a commercial break on TV.

This is an example of Youtube being used for journalistic purposes. Everyday there are hundreds of packages that air across the United States that tell interesting stories during newscasts. People live busy lives and it is unrealistic to think that everyone that would find a certain package interesting is tuning in at the same time. So, putting packages online via Youtube is a great way to get information out there for people that may have missed it but still have interest in it.

Facebook is the major way that people find out about things and how they get their news. Many people don’t realize that articles they click on to read while on Facebook are journalism because they aren’t educated to what journalism really is. That makes a situation where people either view everything as journalism, or nothing as journalism. There is a balance. Being a journalism major, I know that CBS News is a reputable news source and that is why I pulled a post from their page. It is a growing issue that needs to be brought to the forefront in a way that doesn’t make it feel like journalists are preaching or trying to say how great their journalism is compared to another reputable source.

Journalism and social media is a big part of society. People may not realize they are reading a journalistic piece, or interacting with a journalist, but they are. Making sure that good journalism gets spread and distributed through social media platforms and making sure people are aware that they are reading good journalism is going to be important moving forward. Journalism has used social media in good ways (those shown above) but there is plenty of bad journalism out there. Look for easy signs of bad journalism such as spelling or grammar mistakes, a website or news platform you have never heard of, and obviously biased articles. Those aren’t journalism and being informed as to what is journalism will help not only journalists, but the world.
