Five step action plan to break into product!

Breaking into product isn’t that difficult, however, you need to be targeted & considered in your approach. Think about the following:

1. Past experiences: product management essentially revolves around strategy, user discovery, product delivery & outcome validation. Have a think about where you’ve applied these skills in the past, ideally in a some kind of a tech environment. If not in tech, still start thinking about these transferable skills.

2. Build product sense, pick out about five products you like within different domains and think about the following:

• Who are the target personas?, How are they empowered?, Who are the competitors? etc
• What does the competitive landscape look like? Look at pricing, feature sets, financial reports, customer reviews, LinkedIn etc to get greater guidance
• Based on the above what are some fictional OKR’s you could set to grow the product?
• Use the app and really think about what are the key user goals that you trying to achieve and how do you feel when performing these goals?

5. Be goal driven & persistent — this is a journey & a vast field! Really focus in on the key areas & gaps you possess with due dates to ensure a motivation to finish. Key trait while being a product manager, you should definitely get into this habit ASAP!
