Getting a job in software development

Looking for a job is never easy, especially if you have not had a programming job before and new to the field. Honestly, if you interested in a job as a computer programmer hopefully this blog could give you some insight and motivation to get a job.

Let's talk about what a computer programmer typically does

° Write programs in a variety of computer languages.

° Debug programs by testing and looking for errors.

° Develop upgrades and updates for existing applications.

° Work closely with other developers

° Communication skills

Having the ability to express yourself and communicate your thinking process and present your vision is a skill in itself. The skill to be proficient in the English language if you cannot read or write fluently in english most US employers won't even consider you as a candidate if you cannot put words together at the interview. Unless you are some super genius that can execute tasks others can. Then it might not matter if you are obnoxious, smelly, or annoying in the workplace. Studies show that less brilliant jerks or arrogant guys are getting hired less because over time they will lower the moral of the workplace and lead to lower productivity.

° Hard skills vs Soft skills

To employers at the end of the day it comes down to hard skills and soft skills, Hard skills are just your ability to do the basic role of the job. In a programmer perspective this is the ability to write and produce quality code. Soft skills on the other hand come into play because this is your opportunity to really sell yourself and express that you are going to be a real asset to this company. As the time goes on company’s are focusing on hiring people on what they can learn and bring to the company.

Now a days we don’t know where programming languages can go, there is no telling where they will be in five or ten years. This is the reason companies want to higher people with a thing called Advanced soft skills they need people who can be problem solvers, overcome adversity, keep up with the changing technology, become leaders in the work place. All while still producing and being efficient. Let’s take a look at some soft skills you should have under your belt already.

° Be Nice 

Be yourself do not try to be someone you’re not in all aspects of life especially though when you are interviewing. This is important because people can tell when you are not being genuine. Smile when you walk into a room, introduce yourself, shower , be aware of others and their space.

If you were a employer you wouldn't want to hire someone who is going to be mean and throw the vibes off of the workplace. Most tech environments are good vibes all smiles and helpful kind people. It makes since that these are the type of people companies would want to hire.

° Be Competent 

Even though you have superb soft skills and you hard skills are unmatched plus you are a brilliant problem solver you still need to be competent in the workplace. In other words are you capable to do the task at hand?

° Team Work 

Being able to work as a team is a sought after skill. If you are able and open to help each other people tend to be more effective. If you have experience working in team based environment this will ring a bell to employers.

° Be true 

Work hard, Be honest don't say anything negative about anyone else be true to yourself as a person. Have positive thoughts, life is beautiful and you only have one. Soft skills are about character and hard skills are about your work ethic. Do good work and hold yourself to a high standard and Integrity to boost the moral of others around you.
