The Blood of Ancient Kings

Let Sleeping Gods Lie, Act 2: The Other Side #1

Continued from Half a Girl From Hal a World Away. And Catch up on all the stories from Act1: An Unusual Brain here.

Song of the Unknown Realm, Time Immemorial. Author Unknown.

Abraham woke, as he always did at 6:38 am, two minutes before his alarm. He grabbed his mobile phone to silence it and let Jean sleep in. He spent three minutes on his balance board before heading to the bathroom to get ready for the day. A few stretches, a one-minute plank followed by cat-cow and he was on his way for breakfast. He walked down the hall, taking time to enjoy pictures of Lucy and Franklin before heading upstairs past his study where he had spent the last couple of months not transcribing his memoir.

Soon it will be time. He assured himself. Soon.

Abe turned on the machine to heat up for Jeanie’s coffee and settled down at the breakfast bar with a bowl of Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes, he was too tired to make a green smoothie today. By the time he popped his bowl in the dishwasher, Jeanie was on her way up. He made her the same coffee she had drunk for the past twenty-three years and settled down next to her to chat and read before heading out to work. Jean kissed Abraham goodbye as she reversed the car out of the carport and got on her way to the clinic. He watched her go with a smile, grabbed his bag, and stepped out the front gate.

The day was overcast and breezy. Patchy sunlight warmed Abraham as he walked his familiar route to the local library. Past the four big pine trees and the abandoned fish and chip shop on the corner, along the bumpy footpath of a quiet Brisbane street and past teddy-bear Robin Hood, still perched in his tree after so many years.
