Get Involved with Drupal Social Initiative

Drupal Social Initiative is a working group to harmonize Social Networking functionality in Drupal.

The goal of the Drupal Social Initiative (Social API) is to harmonise Social Networking functionality in Drupal; provide more functionality to end-users; provide easier site creation and configuration to site administrators and developers; and enable easier module maintenance for developers.

Drupal was accepted into Google Summer of Code 2016 and 11 Drupal projects were accepted. This means in 2016 Google funded 11 people with 60,500 USD. The people worked for 10 weeks on various projects and thus helped in making Drupal even better!

The main aim of Drupal Social Initiative is to permit an easy integration of various Social Networks functionality like Authentication etc on any Drupal based website/blog.

The current organizers of the Social Initiative group on Drupal Groups are:-

The Social API harmonizes authentication with external services in Drupal, providing an extensible module that allows integration of modules for user authentication, autoposting, and any tasks that require authentication with external providers.

The Social API project has 3 main components:

There are several ways to contribute and get involved. Head on to the Social Initiative Group and know more about the initiative.

You can do various things like creating introductory videos for new users, documentation of the usage and improve the code etc. You can also create new implementers of Social API like Social Auth modules, Social Post modules for various social networks whose implementers don’t exist yet. Additionally, you can debug the current modules as well.

So what are you waiting for? Get involved with the Drupal Social Initiative now.

I am a student participant at Google Code-in 2018 and I am contributing mainly to Drupal during the event. I worked with Drupal during Google Code-in 2017 as well and I was chosen a Google Code-in finalist by Drupal in 2017 for my contributions to Drupal.

Drupal is a great, welcoming open source community. You will always found people ready to help the newcomers. I have contributed to several open source communities, but Drupal is the different one in terms of helping out newbies. I remember doing silly mistakes like attaching wrong interdiff in an issue, leaving whitespaces and 80 col violations etc. Instead of getting frustrated on my mistakes, the other pr0 (experienced) contributors helped me out, pointed out my mistakes and the ways to correct them.

Contributing to Social Initiative is also a thing that I have been doing since last year. I have made contributions to many Social Initiative issues in the past one year. Most of them were related to readme(s), documentations as I still consider myself a n00b (inexperienced) in coding. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when an issue is marked as fixed due to my efforts.
